Need simple indexed Boolean search on your hard drive / ssd?
Updating an unsupported application installer file with AI (Claude)
The following is for Google Desktop “hard drive”/ SSD search for Linux and OS computers
Windows: https://anytxt.net/how-to-use-google-desktop-search-windows-10/#How_to_use_Google_Desktop_Search_Windows_10
Alternative - Everything (non-Google search): https://www.voidtools.com/downloads/
OSX:
https://www.google.com/search?q=indexed%20Boolean%20search%20osx&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-m
Linux: Spent yesterday on a problem that's been annoying me since 2011 - searching mass storage. Baloo search tool in Ubuntu unpredictable, not good at finding files, crashes, occasionally pulls 100% CPU , generates huge, useless index files.
Linked AI chat procedure would probably work o]n Windows, OSX. Find installable file for your OS, read chat.
Google Desktop for Linux, (like google but for hard drives - keywords, AND OR NOT) worked well. Was discontinued in 2011. Can't be installed on modern Linux systems because device libraries have evolved.
Want an updated version installer deb? Mine is for Ubuntu 24.10, probably ok on any Debian-related distro
Requires finding & installing 3 dependencies, 2 symlinks. Took me all day, should take you a few minutes.
Spent several hours with Anthropic Claude AI + online research tracking down library dependencies updating Google Desktop. It now works, integrates to Plasma 6 task manager as it did with KDE 3. This can probably be made to work on OSX. I found old google desktop on archive.org.
Found google-desktop-linux_current_i386.deb

Oops. Forgot to include info on DISABLING baloo.
Do not simply delete baloo, deletion will brick your desktop.
To safely stop baloo permanently, see below.
Installing Desktop on a new machine this weekend. Will update post afterwards.
$ balooctl6 suspend
$ balooctl6 disable
reboot
$ balooctl6 purge
deletes drive space wasted on baloo index db
